The Long-range Research Initiative aims to ensure a sustainable and healthy future by enabling industry, regulators and society as a whole to make informed decisions based on high quality information.
Implemented under the responsibility of three regional centers (US, Japan, and Europe), LRI seeks to:
- Better understand the potential impacts that chemicals may have on human health, wildlife and the environment
- Support robust and informed decision making
- Improve public confidence in decisions based on a scientific understanding of risk
Projects are implemented in cooperation with the scientific community and government institutions and results are published and shared freely with the public, regulators, industry, and the academic and government communities.
LRI expands the chemical industry’s commitment to Responsible Care® and strengthens the basis for regional and international chemical policies. It helps us establish a reliable framework for innovation. Working toward this goal, the LRI funds high-quality research within universities as well as public, private and governmental research institutes. Since 1999, LRI has invested over $200 million in areas such as:
- Computational tools and models
- Human biomonitoring
- Intelligent testing strategies
- Alternatives to animal use
- Persistence and bioaccumulation
- Exposure assessment
- Toxicogenomics and its role in risk assessment
- Innovations in risk assessment
Essentially, the program acts as a “multiplier,” extending its influence far beyond its boundaries by fostering understanding, cooperation and capacity building among all responsible partners.
