Chemical industry
The Australian chemical industry and the associated plastics industry make up the fourth largest manufacturing sector in the country, with a combined annual turnover of AUD$32.5 billion, and employs more than 85,000 people. Australia is a net importer of chemicals with more than 30% of domestic demand currently met by imports, which have a total value exceeding AUD$14 9 billion annually. The industry exports approximately AUD$3.7 billion worth of product annually.
National association
The Plastics and Chemicals Industries Association (PACIA) represents all sectors of the plastics and chemicals supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, processors, distributors, and transport and storage companies. PACIA has about 200 members 260 member companies ranging from large multinational and national groups to small processors, manufacturers and service providers. Its activities include: advocacy and lobbying, issues management, regulatory affairs management, administration and promotion of the Responsible Care® and Plascare™ programs, executive and employee training and community information programs.
Through Responsible Care® and Plascare™, PACIA helps its members ensure that the plastics and chemicals industries are leaders in health, safety and environmental performance. PACIA employs 17 staffers and several specialist consultants and has offices in several key Australian cities.
