Chemical industry
The Italian chemical sector  plays a fundamental role in the national economy and industry, providing innovative, highly customised and environmental chemical products that help ensure a dynamic role for Italian industry as a whole in global markets.

The Italian chemical industry is characterised by SMEs, with hundreds of companies specialising in market niches, and many competing at the global level. These companies are concentrated in fine and specialty chemicals, playing an important role in technology transfer to the downstream sectors.

Over the past decade, Italian chemical companies have successfully competed in a global marketplace:  exports as a percentage of turnover grew from 19% to 38% - faster than any other European country.

National association
The Italian chemical industry is represented by Federchimica which groups 16 sector associations representing 41 product groups and more than 1,300 companies, mainly SMEs, which are present in all industry sectors.

The primary objectives of Federchimica are the co-ordination, support and ongoing development of the role of the Italian chemical industry. It works for the production of guidelines in economic, industrial and labour matters and also in the areas of environment, innovation and energy policies. It is also committed in the promotion of these policies with public authorities, national economic organisations, other entrepreneurial organisations, international organisations to which Federchimica belongs, trade unions, environmental and consumer organisations.
