Chemical industry
In 2006, total production of the chemical industry reached a record high of Yen26 trillion and was the third largest manufacturing industry in Japan. The sector plays a significant role within the Japanese manufacturing industry with products from the chemical industry variously used as raw materials, intermediates, and in consumer products.

R&D expenditure in 2006 was Yen 2.044 billion and represented 15% of total expenditure of all manufacturing industry.  The chemical industry spent 5.3% of turnover on R&D. It employed around 344,000 in 2006, representing 4% of the total number of people working in the manufacturing sector.  Chemical exports continued to exceed imports, and the Japanese chemical industry is a key supplier to manufacturers of electrical appliances worldwide.

National association
The Japan Chemical Industry Association, JCIA, includes some 190 member companies and around 80 organizations. Under the basic concept of “coexistence and co-prosperity with society” JCIA has undertaken activities over 60 years to fulfil its mission of promoting the stable development of the chemical industry. thus contributing to the economic prosperity of Japan and elevation of national living standards.

As Japan’s representative member and one of the leading members of ICCA, the JCIA is proactively tackling three priority issues of Chemical Policy and Health, Energy and Climate Change, and Responsible Care.  In Asia in particular, JCIA conducts various activities such as promoting implementation of Responsible Care and technology transfer to address important issues such as global warming.
