Chemical industry
The major industrial sector in Norway in terms of gross output, value added and export is the offshore petroleum sector. The process industries (e.g. Chemicals, metals, alloys and pulp/paper) are dominating onshore industries. The chemical industry is Norway’s fourth largest sector in terms of export, gross output and value added. The Norwegian chemical industry comprises a number of areas such as fertilizers, resins, petrochemicals, industrial chemicals, paints and coatings, plastic products, the pharmaceutical industry and also new high tech field like bio-industries.
The EU is the main export market for the Norwegian chemical industry with a share of approx. 80%.
National association
The chemical sector is represented by the Federation of Norwegian Industries (Norsk Industri). Norsk Industri represents about 90% of chemical companies in Norway. Norsk Industri organize the majority of Norwegian industrial sectors, and as such both the aforementioned process industries as well as manufacturing industries (Ships, petroleum installations, furniture, etc.) and mining. The federation works in close co-operation with member companies and with other business organizations.
Membership of the federation is drawn from all industry sectors from basic chemicals to manufactured products and articles.
