Chemical industry
The chemical industry in Singapore is a key contributor to the nation’s economy and is the leading manufacturing cluster, contributing 33% or SGD83.1 billion of overall manufacturing output in 2007. The industry has been growing steadily since the turn of the century, and has more than doubled in value since 2004’s SGD39.1 billion. The industry employs some 23,000 workers, many of which are located on Jurong Island. Jurong Island is among the world’s top 10 petrochemical hubs and is home to over 94 leading petroleum, petrochemical, specialty chemical and supporting companies, who together, have made a total investment of more than S$31 billion in fixed assets on site.

New crackers will double Singapore’s current ethylene output of 2 million tonnes/year by year 2011.  As well as major petrochemicals activities, Singapore also hosts over 1000 specialty companies.
