ICCA & nanomaterials

01 July 2009

ICCA’s position leading in to ICCM-2 was to support the OECD’s extensive work to improve global understanding towards the responsible development of nanotechnology, and to suggest that activities under SAICM on nanotechnology should seek to build on rather than duplicate existing work.

The contact group on emerging issues established a small drafting group to progress a resolution on nanotechnology, with ICCA represented. The resolution recognizes the potential environmental and health benefits and risks associated with nanotechnologies and manufactured nanomaterials, highlights the need for further research in this area, and requests SAICM stakeholders to facilitate access to and share relevant information as it becomes available, while protecting confidential business information. The resolution also acknowledges the important role of the OECD and other international organizations in promoting better understanding of nanotechnology, and invites governments and other stakeholders to develop a report on this issue for consideration at the Open Ended Working Group meeting and ICCM-3.

ICCA is committed to sound governance and transparency in this emerging field and is working with a number of different stakeholders including the OECD, the International Chamber of Commerce, the NanoBusiness Alliance, academia and NGOs on related programs.  These efforts will help to evaluate and develop EHS-related issues, identify common priorities for responsible innovation, evaluate and address potential risks, and develop reporting programs.
