Global Chemical Industry participates in the Johannesburg summit
30 August 2002
Brussels 13 August 2002 - The International Council of Chemical Associations, ICCA, has today launched a new internet web site - www.icca-at-wssd.org - for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, from 26 August until 4 September 2002.
The website outlines the major contributions of the chemical industry towards sustainable development, and highlights the challenges still lying ahead. These challenges and developments are also presented in a series of brochures that have been prepared especially for the World Summit. These include:
1. "On the Road to Sustainability" which presents the overall approach being taken by the industry, citing examples of good practice; industry progress towards sustainability, and the challenges that lie ahead
2. "ICCA Responsible Care Status Report 2002" which describes recent developments in the industry's long-standing voluntary initiative to improve safety, health and environmental performance worldwide.
3. Information on other key ICCA initiatives, including the HPV initiative - which will have completed the safety assessment of the 1,000 highest production volume chemicals (accounting for over 95% of chemicals production) by the end of 2004, and the Long-range Research Initiative (LRI) - which is funding independent research to develop greater scientific understanding into how chemicals may impact on health and the environment.
This website provides full details about the ICCA presence at the exhibit and its side-event on capacity building, which takes place on 30 August 2002 in Johannesburg. Visitors can also read ICCA’s regular news and are invited to give their views about the chemical industry’s efforts toward sustainable development and its contribution at the Johannesburg Summit.
The ICCA is running a booth at the Ubuntu Village complex in Johannesburg where the materials will also be available.
