Global Chemical Industry's responsible care initiative recognised by international bodies for contribution to sustainable development

Brussels , 30 September 2002 – The ICCA, International Council of Chemical Associations’ Responsible Care initiative has been commended by the United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP and the International Chamber of Commerce ICC for its global contribution to sustainable development through the World Summit Business Awards for Sustainable
Development Partnerships earlier this month.
More than 120 partnerships from 37 countries submitted nominations to the award scheme. In addition, the ICCA’s UNEP industry sector report earned a top mark from the magazine “Tomorrow”, which undertook an independent critique of all 22 UNEP Sectoral reports. The magazine said that stakeholder consultations through Responsible Care had earned the report a top grade.
“The global chemical industry is delighted to have received recognition for its commitment to sustainable development through Responsible Care,” said Alain Perroy, Council Secretary of the ICCA and Director General of the European Chemical Industry Council, Cefic. “The international chemical community’s collective partnership through Responsible Care provides an example of how an industry can work towards sustainable development and be recognised as part of the
solution.”
Venezuela
Venezuela recently became the 47th country to join the Responsible Care initiative. The Venezuelan Association of the Chemical and Petrochemical Industry, ASOQUIM represents 103 companies, employing 24,000 people and generating a total sales of US$ 3,048 billion.The application was sponsored by Brazil which has been running a Responsible Care programme for 10 years.
Responsible Care started in 1985 in Canada and is successfully driving continuous improvement in the safety, health and environmental performance of chemical companies and along the supply chain in a manner responsive to the public.
