UNEP is developing a strategic approach to chemicals management. ICCA is closely involved in the process, which will officially start on 9-13 November 2003 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The first session of the Preparatory Committee for the Development of a Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (“SAICM PrepCom1”) will be held in Bangkok from 9-13 November 2003. The SAICM will be developed under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

On that occasion, the scope (a binding instrument? A political declaration?) and first possible elements of a SAICM will be proposed, outlining the process that will bring to the launch of an official, global chemical strategy by end 2005.

The global chemical industry is supportive of this process, which it sees as an  opportunity to proactively contribute to the development of a sound chemicals management policy, further improving the safe use and handling of chemicals across the product chain, and building on the existing chemical industry’s voluntary initiatives, such as Responsible Care, and the High Volume Chemicals Programme (HPV). These principles are also enshrined in the 2001 position paper “Global strategy for chemicals management” from the International Council of Chemicals Associations (ICCA).
