High Production Volume (HPV) Chemicals Initiative

The chemical industry recognises the need for a sufficient knowledge base to assess the health, safety and environmental effects of chemicals and to assist users and governments to manage the risks they may pose.

In 1998, ICCA, in co-operation with the OECD and its member countries, launched the High Production Volume (HPV) Chemicals Initiative.

Under this voluntary programme, harmonised, internationally agreed upon data and initial hazard assessments for approximately 1,000 HPV substances by the end of 2004 (later renewed to delivery by end of 2009) and to submit. The chemicals selected for this initiative represent more than 90% of the global chemicals production.

This information will provide a sound scientific basis for global, regional or national risk assessments.
