Long-range Research Initiative (LRI)

Under the Long-range Research Initiative (LRI), the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic), the American Chemistry Council (ACC) and the Japan Chemical Industry Association (JCIA) have jointly committed to support research of importance to the chemical industry and society.  The global LRI is providing approximately $34 million a year to sponsor research into the potential impacts of chemicals on human and wildlife populations and the environment.

The LRI research priorities include improving methods to evaluate and interpret the impacts of chemicals, identifying factors that influence susceptibility, especially for children, evaluating the pathways of chemical movement from their sources to people or ecosystems, and improving approaches to address issues arising from the EU Chemicals Policy.

The initiative adheres to strict principles: Research will pursue scientific excellence by using the best scientists and by seeking advances in scientific understanding. The research process is transparent. The principal investigator is independent and responsible for reporting and interpreting the results publicly, regardless of the outcome. The research process will prevent conflicts of interest and guard against bias in decision-making. Research needs and priorities will be set with consideration of the relevance of the research to the chemical industry and to meet the overall goal of funding research that increases scientific understanding about the potential health and environmental impacts of chemicals.
