The global chemical industry
- represented by ICCA - welcomes the outcome of the Johannesburg
World Summit on Sustainable Development (26 August-4 September 2002),
which convened world governments,
concerned citizens, UN agencies, multilateral financial institutions
and other major groups to review progress in the ten years since
the Rio Summit.
The global chemical industry sees the Summit as a golden opportunity
to make further substantial progress towards the goal of Sustainable
Development, and supports the Action
Plan on Chemicals agreed by Heads of State (see
ICCA press release). The Action Plan provides that, by 2020,
chemicals can be used and produced in ways that lead to minimization
of significant adverse effects on human health and the environment
based on sound science, risk assessment, and risk management,
following the precautionary approach as set out in the Rio agreement.
