The Chemicals Industry in Australia
The Australian chemistry industry – including the chemicals and plastics sectors – is the third largest manufacturing sector in the country. It has a combined annual turnover of AUD$40 billion, employs more than 60,000 people and represents about 11.5 percent of total Australian manufacturing activity.
The Plastics and Chemicals Industries Association (PACIA) represents all sectors of the chemicals and plastics supply chain, including chemicals manufacturers, raw material suppliers, plastics fabricators and compounders, importers and distributors, logistics and supply chain partners, chemicals and plastics recyclers, and service providers to the sector.
PACIA has approximately 160 members ranging from small family-owned companies and innovative medium-sized enterprises, to leading national and multinational enterprises.
Its operations center around the three strategic pillars of Industry Advocacy, Sustainability Leadership and Member Services, supported by Strategic Partnerships. These include activities such as advocacy and lobbying to state and federal government and regulators, issues and media management, promotion of the industry wide Sustainability Leadership Framework, administration and promotion of Responsible Care® and much more.
PACIA helps its members ensure that the Australian chemistry industry is a leader in health, safety and environmental performance. PACIA employs 14 staff and a number of specialist consultants and has offices in several key Australian cities, including Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.
