GPCA report highlights industry’s environmental and safety performance

GPCA has released its 2016 Responsible Care Performance Metrics Report highlighting the Arabian Gulf industry’s health, safety and environmental performance.

‘Setting standards through transparency’ brings together the collective environment, health and safety performance data of the GCC chemical and petrochemical industry for 2013-2016.  The data is collected in accordance with ICCA’s Global Harmonized Process Safety Metrics and covers 21 individual metrics with a data reporting level of 97%.

The report highlights the continued reduction of the Total Reportable Incident Rate (TRIR) for accidents at member facilities – down from 0.275 per 200,000 man hours worked in 2013 to 0.120 in 2016.  While this is still below the American Chemistry Council’s benchmark industry figure, eight of the 36 member companies reported zero accidents […]

Strengthening Responsible Care brand

Although the Responsible Care brand is well-known and respected as a concept, the actual knowledge about what the initiative is and what it offers could be further strengthened, notably within international bodies such as UN Environment. Obviously, the current state of communications about the program is insufficient in providing key stakeholders a practical understanding of the initiative, in particular what it requires companies to do and how the initiative drives continuous improvement and excellence throughout the global chemical industry in the key performance areas of process safety, occupational safety, environmental protection, security, community outreach, safe chemicals transport and product stewardship.

French chemical industry association UIC hosts 3rd annual Responsible Care® awards

The French chemical industry association Union des Industries Chimique (UIC) hosted its third biennial Responsible Care Awards on May 26, back to back with the General Assembly.

The main purpose of the awards is to give visibility to the Responsible Care initiative and go beyond the key performance indicators (KPIs). They enable to illustrate the progress carried out by our member companies in the field of health, safety and environment protection.

This third edition showed the maturity of the initiative. Responsible Care awards are now well established and all the member companies do participate, from the smallest (10 employees, turnover of 1.3 million €) to the biggest (>1000 000 employees, turnover of 75 billions €).

The SAICM Journey: 20 Milestones to 2020 [INFOGRAPHIC]

The International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) has made real, tangible progress on the road to sound chemicals management.

That’s because ICCA is an association of innovators, visionaries, solutions providers and product stewardship pioneers. Above all, we are optimists. What others see as challenges, we see as opportunities to solve some of the world’s biggest problems.

Our shared optimism has driven us to reach new heights along the SAICM journey, guided by ICCA’s Global Product Strategy (GPS) and Responsible Care programs. While we’ve made progress, the journey continues.

By strengthening SAICM, we can accelerate and intensify the deployment of innovative products and technologies to address global challenges and enable a more sustainable future.

All Aboard: Chinese Chemical Industry Leaders Sign Onto Responsible Care Global Charter

On September 18 in Shanghai, chemical industry leaders from around the world gathered as more than 300 Chinese chemical company CEOs belonging to the China Petrochemicals and Chemicals Industry Federation (CPCIF) formally signed onto the Responsible Care® Global Charter. By doing so, China has demonstrated its commitment to strengthen chemicals management systems to safeguard people and the environment.

This is particularly significant as a safe, strong and vibrant chemical industry in China is an asset to both the global chemicals industry and world economy. China is currently the largest chemicals manufacturing economy in the world, valued at around U.S. $1.44 trillion in 2014, and CPCIF members represent 70 percent of the petroleum and chemical industry in China.
